Modest Family Home In Sydney Updated With A New Layout And Simplified Interior

For a space to truly feel like home it takes time and sometimes renovations and changes are in order. This is the story of a family home in Sydney, Australia which needed a remodel. Studio MCK Architecture + Interiors was happy to take on the challenge of transforming this place into a lovely home for a family of five.

This transition was made in 2018. The original house had a rather modest footprint and the owners didn’t really want to expand beyond that. Rather than adding more volumes to the existing ones the architects and the owners reached an agreement to instead modify and optimize what was already there.

The new design chooses to embrace simplicity in every way. The original footprint was kept as it was and the layout was modified. Previously this was quite disorganized and the original layout didn’t really make the most of the available square footage. The new one improves the circulation between all the different areas of the house and makes the interior spaces look and feel more generous in size and more welcoming overall.

The main objectives of the renovation were quite simple and expected from such a project. The owners wanted to have more space in the living room, a space where they could work from home, an extra bedroom and a better connection with the garden and the outdoors in general. These requests were fulfilled without having to expand the house. The same modest footprint is now complemented by a well-organized and generous interior and that’s exactly what the goal of this project was from the very beginning.
