Former churches transformed into houses are some of the most charming and unique homes. They have a rich history and lots of unique features that give them character and although the restoration and renovation process is challenging it’s all worth it when the result is as amazing as this home from Spain. This used to be a small church originally built in the 16th century.
The church had been abandoned for quite some time before studio Garmendia Cordero Arquitectos was tasked with its restoration. It had become structurally unstable and the roof had collapsed into the interior. A lot of work went into making it strong and sturdy once again plus the architects also had to keep in mind that this was meant to become someone’s actual home.
All the repair work and the changes were intentionally left exposed and allowed to stand out by contrasting with the original body of the church. It was very important to respect the elements that were already there and the history of this beautiful church. As such, there’s now a strong contrast between the old and the new and it’s obvious where the interventions were made. That allows this place to tell a unique and beautiful story about its past and present.
