A lot of remodeling projects can be considered great sources of inspiration. It’s always interesting to see how old structures evolve over time, how they change but also how they sometimes stay true to their original design and character. Today we’re checking out a project that was completed in 2020 by studio Contech.
They worked on the renovation and expansion of a family residence located in Adelaide, Australia. The main goal was to give this 1950’s art deco house a series of spacious new living areas where the family can entertain. These were added in the new extension and they have a strong connection with the backyard which was one of the requirements.
What’s interesting about the Plympton Residence is the fact that it looks quite modest and understated from the street but it becomes more and more rich in details as you step inside and get to discover all the spaces. Also, the entrance has a direct line of sight towards the swimming pool in the backyard which instantly draws the guests in and gives them something to focus on as they go through the living area.
There’s a strong focus on the outdoor areas and the transitions between the indoor spaces and the backyard. A large panoramic window frames a view of the pool and the polished concrete floor extends a bit outside, then transitioning onto a beautiful wooden deck. Although there’s not a ton of space outside, the backyard is filled with cool features such as a fire pit, a sheltered seating area, an outdoor bar and an alfresco dining area.
