A covered deck that’s directly adjacent to the house can easily become an extension of the indoor living areas. The transition can be made even smoother with sliding glass doors. Add a pergola-style roof
If you want something a bit more casual, look at some pergola designs for inspiration. The type of roof used here by studio Earthtone Construction is partially functional and partially decorative, with an emphasis on the latter. It does however make this small wooden deck look really lovely and welcoming.
Hang a casual shade sail
If you’ve not yet decided if you want the deck to be open or covered, an in-between option would be to hang a patio shade sail. You can just casually stretch across a section of the deck to created a shaded spot, leaving the rest exposed so you can also enjoy the sun. Create an airy vibe with a fabric canopy
The fabric canopy makes this deck by Tollo&C look super inviting and cozy plus it has the added benefit of providing shade during the day without completely blocking off the sunlight. It’s a casual and relaxed look which makes the deck a perfect spot for a lounge area. Furthermore, this design also includes curtains for a more pronounced effect.
Incorporate a sleek roof extension
A lot of times the deck is designed to wrap around the house and to serve as a transitional feature between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Adding a roof extension makes it look more intentional. Also, it makes it easier to open up the interior spaces towards the yard or the garden since there’s now a buffer between them. Mimic the roof of the house
If the goal is for the covered deck to look like a part of the house, a nice trick is to mimic the house’s roof and that can be done in a variety of different ways. The strategy used here by studio Urban Oasis Design & Construction was to have a low pitched roof but to make it sufficiently different from the main house so that it can stand out on its own.
Keep it airy
Since this is meant to be an outdoor space after all, keeping it nice and open and airy could be a good strategy. You can still add a cover like a pergola roof overhead for a cozy and sheltered look but make it high enough so it doesn’t get in the way. Using wood would help to make the deck feel warm and cozy and so would have a fire pit or a fireplace.
A raised deck design
A deck that’s level with the ground is great if you want to create a seamless indoor-outdoor transition but if you’re going for a sheltered covered deck design perhaps a raised structure would be better. Add skylights to let in the sunlight
Something else to consider when building a roof over your deck is that it would be fairly easy to make room for a few skylights. Cover the deck only partially
It’s nice to have a spot with shade that’s protected from rain, an area where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors at any time. It’s also nice to be out in the open and enjoy the sunlight. So why not combine these two concepts and have an outdoor deck that’s only partially covered? That’s exactly the strategy used here by studio MB Design & Build.
Create a layered design
You can also make a sheltered deck by using a variety of techniques and supplies. For instance, here’s a laid-back design by Danny Deck Construction. It makes use of two shade sails and there’s also an umbrella that can be used to make separate shaded spots whenever needed. The sails create this really nice layered look that suits this sort of relaxed decor.
Take advantage of beautiful views
It’s not just the design of the deck that matters but also it’s positioning. It would be cool to build the deck in such a way that it gets to enjoy a nice view. A corner deck design could actually work really well. This one was designed by studio Three Sixty and it may not be very big but it feels quite expansive. How about a sunroom instead?
You can also take the idea of a covered deck one step further and create a sunroom. You could give it big full-height windows and glass doors that can be opened up when it’s warm and sunny outside. Make it feel like part of your home
As mentioned before, covered decks look and feel like seamless extensions of the indoor living areas. As such, you can furnish and decorate them accordingly and build up on this idea. Add some comfortable seating, a fireplace, accent lighting and even an outdoor TV.
Use natural textures and materials
Using natural materials like wood, rattan or stone allows the outdoor areas to blend with the surroundings more easily. This right here is a really nice look for a small covered deck. Add some lights for effect
Adding a variety of light sources can give a covered deck a really nice and cozy look after sunset. You can use built-in ceiling lights, hanging lamps, sconces and even table lamps.
