Emerald Green Arborvitae Spacing
The Emerald Green Arborvitae needs to have enough room to grow but they shouldn’t be spaces so far apart that the “wall” is no more. So it’s a good idea to plant Emerald Green Arborvitae trees about five to six feet apart.
When it comes to Green Giant Arborvitae, somewhere between 10-15 feet is a better option because they can grow up to twenty feet wide. But Emerald Greens only grow a few feet wide so six feet is enough space for both trees to barely meet.
How Fast Do Emerald Green Arborvitae Grow
The Emerald Green Arborvitae grows about one to two feet per year. This is in the proper climate. While climate doesn’t change a lot, if the tree doesn’t get enough water or gets too much, it can affect the growth rate.
These trees are quite hearty and won’t die in the wrong climate, but they can grow slower in some and faster in others. The Green Giant will grow a few feet every year, sometimes up to five feet in one year.
How To Plant Emerald Green Arborvitae
Although you can plant an Emerald Green Arborvitae anytime, the best time to do so is in the fall. Evergreen trees excel in the winter rather than the summer like other trees do. So autumn is your best bet.
Step 1: Weed The Area
Take care of any weeds or debris in the area. Remove it all to clear a good spot for the tree. It can also be a good idea at this point to mark where all the trees will go, ensuring you place them in a straight line.
Step 2: Till The Land
Loosen the soil in the area with a spade. This process is called tilling and it gets the soil ready to plant trees in by removing the turf and bringing up the more fertile soil. It also softens the land to make for easy planting.
Step 3: Dig A Hole
Dig a hole that is about twice the width of the root ball. Though it shouldn’t be any deeper than the root ball as this is how the tree will naturally grow. The width itself isn’t very touchy, but twice as wide is a good width.
Step 4: Prep The Root Ball
Lightly brush the root ball around with your hand to get it ready for planting. Try not to disturb it too much or pull out any roots. But just enough so that it “wakes up” so to speak, getting rid of any crust on the outside layer.
Step 5: Plant The Tree
Plant the tree so that the root ball is just higher than ground level. The top should be nearly flush but just higher. Fill the rest of the hole back up and be sure to use mulch. Don’t pack it tightly or that tree may suffocate.
How To Care For your Emerald Green Arborvitae
Taking care of your Emerald Green Arborvitae isn’t difficult. In fact, most people will plant the trees and leave them. Especially if it rains a lot in their area. However, if you want the best for your tree, that is understandable.
Being able to leave a plant without thinking about it can be fabulous! But here are the things you can do to take care of your Emerald Green Arborvitae.
Sunshine
Emerald Green Arborvitae can grow well in direct sunlight or half-shade. The only thing that they can’t do is thrive in full shade all day long. They are not indoor trees and need a half-day of sunshine.
When planning your plant your tree, it’s a good idea to time the amount of sun the area gets each day. Go for about a week before you plant your tree, figuring up the average amount of sun the area gets.
Climate
Emerald Green Arborvitae doesn’t like humidity. Though it can still grow, if the climate is too humid, it is possible for the tree to grow a fungus which could affect the look and the lifespan of the Emerald Green.
But this is primarily only a problem when the tree is still young, which is why it is recommended to plant it in the fall. Because they do very well in cold weather, even if it is below freezing by 40 degrees.
Soil
When it comes to soil, there is only one thing that these trees care about aside from having their own bed of soil in general. That is pH levels. While they can survive in most pH levels, they have an ideal range.
For most Thujas, pH levels in the range of 6-8 are perfect. You can go with lower or higher but if you go too far one way or the other than you may end up with a problem. Though this rarely happens.
Water
When the Emerald Green Arborvitae is a baby, you will have to water it twice a week. But this is normal with any tree. After that, you can water it once a week. But some people never water their Emerald Green Arborvitae.
This is acceptable as long as the leaves don’t brown from being overwatered or the tree doesn’t get root rot from being overwatered. So check for these two things and you shouldn’t have a problem here either.
Pruning
Emerald Green Arborvitae don’t need to be pruned. However, you can trim them in the spring to get a thicker coat that looks lush and healthy. The only pruning that you should do no matter what is get rid of diseased branches.
This is so that the branches won’t infect the rest of the tree. But this is rare. Otherwise, you shouldn’t have to worry about pruning for any other reason than personal preference. Because that’s all that is left.
Fertilizer
Lucky for you if you hate feeding trees because the Emerald Green Arborvitae doesn’t need fertilizer. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t feed it of course, just that you don’t need to. It will find its own food.
You can use a simple fertilizer for it if you choose to feed it. Something that works for small to medium-sized evergreen trees will work for the Emerald Green. It is not a picky eater. After all, it doesn’t need to eat!
Choosing The Right Emerald Green Arborvitae
If you’ve decided on getting an Emerald Green Arborvitae then you probably need help picking out the right one. They are usually sold as saplings so picking them out isn’t all that difficult if you’ve planted trees before.
But if you haven’t, then take a look at the tree closely. Does it look healthy? Is it lopsided? Your instincts are your best bet when it comes to picking out a tree. But if they fail you then get some help instead.
