Have you ever looked at a tin can and thought “I could do something cool with that?”. It’s amazing how much potential something so simple and basic can have. With that in mind, today we’re going to show you how you can make a nice and also useful tin can stand/ organizer. It’s something that you can use for small things like hair ties and clips, jewelry, desk accessories and so on.
Materials needed for this tin can stand:
- 2 sizes of tins
- wooden rod
- door knobs
- silk ribbon
- spot glaze
- bonding power
- creme acrylic paint
- hot glue gun
- scissors
- paint brush
How to craft this tin can organizer:
Step 1: Coat the tin cans in bonding power
Before you can go ahead and paint the tin cans so they look nice you must prep them first. That includes cleaning them thoroughly and removing any labels of adhesive that’s still present on them. After that you should apply a coat of bonding power which will ensure that that paint sticks onto the metal and doesn’t immediately slip off.
Step 2: Stain the rod and knobs
There’s a bit more prepping that needs to be done at this point and it involves the wooden rod and the little knobs. These need to be stained so go ahead and apply a coat of spot glaze so give them a nice color and to also add a layer of protection.

Step 3: Paint the tin cans
It’s then time to paint the cans. Use your paint brush and the creme-colored acrylic paint to cover up the exterior of both tin cans. The paint will stick nicely thanks to the bonding adhesive layer which you added earlier.
Step 4: Decorate the large tin can with ribbon
Of course, allow the paint to dry before you do this. Take some of the ribbon you prepared for this project and wrap it around the can on the outside to get an idea of how much you’re going to need. Cut off the excess and then permanently set the ribbon in place using a bit of hot glue. You can center it and create a ring around the can.
Step 5: Repeat the process for the small can
Now that you know how this is done, repeat the same process for the smaller tin can. Cut out a piece of ribbon, then glue it around the outside. The hot glue will harden fast so try to be quick about it.
Step 6: Glue the four knobs onto the bottom of the big can
The four little knobs that you’ve prepared are going to become cute support legs for the large tin can. Before you glue them in place you can first measure and mark four spots using a pencil so you can be sure they’re evenly spaced apart.
Step 7: Glue the rod into the center of the large can
The next step is to take the wooden rod and to position into the center of the large tin can, on the interior. You can mark the spot first with a pencil if you want to. Put some hot glue onto the end of the rod, then put it in place and hold it for a few seconds.
Step 8: Glue the small can on top of the rod
This is the very last step of this project. Take the small tin can and glue it on top of the wooden rod. As before, you can use a pencil to mark the exact center of the can first. Then put some hot glue on the rod and set the can in place, holding it there for a bit so the glue has a chance to harden.
