Struggling to find a good-looking planter for your lovely indoor flowers or herbs? That’s ok because it’s actually easier to make your own planters. It’s also really fun too so you should really give it a try sometime. Here’s a super simple design that doesn’t require a lot of work or a lot of supplies.
Materials needed for a rustic Bucket Planter:
- pot
- rope
- silver yarn
- green acrylic paint
- paint brush
- scissors
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
How to craft this cute bucket planter:
Step 1: Cut two pieces of rope for the handles
This cute bucket planter has handles made of rope. You need to make these and glue them on before you proceed to the next step because they need to be hidden underneath the rope so they look nice and clean and you don’t have any fringes or ugly bits showing through.
First figure out how long you want the handles to be and cut a piece of rope that you think is sufficiently long. Then place it against the rest of the rope and cut another piece the same size.
Step 2: Decorate the handles with silver yarn
For this planter we decided it would be nice to add a bit of sparkle to the handles so we wrapped them in some silver yarn. It’s really easy to do this. Just decide what portion of the handle you want to decorate, tie the silver yarn onto the rope and then wrap it around until you’ve covered the section.
You can decorate the entire handle this way or you can only cover a small portion, just enough to make it a bit more interesting while still keeping the design fairly simple.
Do this for both of the handles making sure you’re consistent with your design. When you’re done just secure the yarn with a couple of knots and cut off the excess.
Step 3: Glue the handles onto the pot
If you want to you can mark the spots where you want the handles to be placed before you actually grab the hot glue gun. Either way, now is the time to glue the handles onto the pot, one on each side, opposite to each other. Just put a little dab of hot glue onto the pot and then press the rope onto it with your finger.
Step 4: Decorate the outside of the pot with rope
This is the part where you planter will actually start to take shape and to change its appearance. Now it’s time to take the rest of the rope and to wrap it around the pot. Start from the pot on the side that you want to become the back of your planter. Put a bit of glue there just under the rim and position the end of the rope on top, pressing it down gently.
From there, start wrapping the rope around the pot and adding more glue as you go, so that the rope is nice and tight and doesn’t come off.
Continue doing this until you cover the whole pot in rope and you reach the bottom. Then, when you completed the last loop, cut off the excess rope and secure the end with glue. It’s ok if it doesn’t look perfectly straight. You’re not going to pay attention to this little detail once your beautiful plants are added.

Step 5: Decorate the planter with paint
This part is actually optional and you can leave the planter as it is if you prefer this plain look. We think the paint really helps to add character to the planter. To complete this step, dip your paintbrush is some acrylic paint in the color of your choice (we chose a light green shade) and then paint the rope at the bottom of the planter as well as the first loop at the top. Let it dry and that’s it, you now have an adorable bucket planter that you can put on display or offer as a gift.
