Context is always important when it comes to houses. This family home from Bangkok, Thailand is a prime example. This is a project completed in 2020 by HAA Studio and replaced an old house which has been demolished. Some of the materials from the old structure were preserved with the explicit purpose of being integrated into the new design as nostalgic decorative details.
The plot is surrounded by two-story houses on 3 sides, with the street bordering it on the 4th side and this meant a unique design approach was needed in order to offer inhabitants lots of privacy but also creating outdoor spaces that suit their lifestyle. Creating a custom home that molds around the personalities and lifestyle of those using it was the main goal.
The owners enjoy swimming and sunbathing and this inspired the architects to center the house around a courtyard with a swimming pool and a large pool deck with sunbeds. This area is surrounded by buildings on all sides which gives it a private and cozy feel but is also open to the sky which creates a feeling of freedom and openness.
Given this courtyard-centric design, the house is organized into different sections on top of having two floors. The first floor is adjacent to the pool and includes the main entrance as well as the master bedroom among other areas. The kitchen and dining area are also on this level and they feature full-height windows that overlook the pool and the terrace. The second floor is organized into three sections, namely a two-bedroom area, a living room and a roof garden.
