Want something to put on your wall, perhaps to fill an empty space or to add more color and texture to the room? Try a wall hanging and make it yourself.
It’s a really nice and simple way to make a space look and feel more cozy and inviting. Everything you need to know about the project can be found in the instructions below.
Materials needed for this yarn tassels:
- yarns
- embroidery thread
- scissors
- branch
- cardboard
- wooden beads
- needle
- needle threader
How to make a tassel wall hanging:
Step 1: We used yarn in three different colors for this wall hanging.
The green and pink is for the tassels and the beige is for the filler. When making this you should start with the filler. Take your yarn and bend it to get a two-strand piece that loops at the top. Make it longer than you think you’ll need it to be. Repeat this process several times and gather your yarn pieces in a pile.
Step 2: Knot the yarn onto the branch
Next, take the pieces of yarn you’ve prepared earlier and knot them onto a small branch. The branch doesn’t need to be perfectly straight or thick so just look for one in your yard or around the house. Start from one end and add more strands until you cover the whole branch except for the ends.
Step 3: Cut off the excess yarn
When you’re done attaching all the yarn pieces to the branch, lay them all flat on a surface and use your scissors to cut off the excess at the bottom. You can go in a straight line or a curved one or you can create a diagonal or a V-shape and so on. It depends on the design that you want to create in the end. We made it slightly curved.
Step 4: Make a tassel
Making tassels is super easy and only requires some yarn and a piece of cardboard. You could even do this without the cardboard and just use your hand instead. In any case, decide how long and think you want the tassel to be, then get to work.
Start by wrapping the yarn around the cardboard a bunch of times.
When you’re done, cut off the excess yarn at the bottom and take another piece of yarn and run beneath the loops, then knot it at the top so it holds all the yarn tightly.
Next, use the scissors to cut the yarn loops in half at the bottom, like you see here.
Use another small piece of yarn to shape the tassel. Wrap it around the yarn somewhere at the top like you see here and then knot it and cut off the excess.
Finally, trim the ends and give your tassel a nice and even look. This is also the time when you can make it shorter if you want to.
Step 5: Repeat and make more different-colored tassels
Now that you know how to make tassels go ahead and make a few more. We already made a green one so we make a pink tassel next. Make a few of these to add some contrast to your wall hanging.
The process is the exact same as before. You can use the same piece of cardboard as a template so all the tassels have the same length.
Step 6: Add beads to your tassels
Next, use a needle and a needle threader to add a few wooden beads to your tassels. If the holes in the beads are big enough you might not need the needle at all. Just thread the two strands at the yarn at the top through the first bead and push it all the way down to begin with.
Then make a knot just beneath where you want the second bead to stay, add the bead and then repeat to add a third bead. If you want more beads just repeat this process as many times as needed.
Step 7: Attach the tassels to the branch
Your tassels are now all done and ready to be added to your wall hanging. Start with the one in the middle and use the two strands of yarn at the top to make a couple of knots so it stays in place on your branch. Then add the other tassels and space them out however you want and combine the colors in any way you prefer.
Step 8: Add a yarn hanger
At this point all the tassels are attached to the branch and the wall hanging is almost complete. The only thing remaining is to add a hanger. Take a piece of yarn (we chose the cream color) and wrap one end onto one end of the branch and the other onto the other end, leaving enough yarn in between for the wall hanging to look nice when up on the wall.
