DIY Barn Door Tutorials

Sliding Barn Door Hardware Kits

A DIY barn door is quite the daring project but at the same time it’s fairly simple. You can even choose to make the actual door yourself from scratch. Be sure it works with the sliding barn door hardware that you want to use. I’m going to lay out the basics of how to make and install this particular one, but be sure to read the full tutorial for more details.

What You Need To Build A Barn Door:

  • 1 piece of plywood (standard is 4×8)
  • x7 3×1 boards that are 7ft long
  • x2 1×1 boards that are 7ft long
  • The barn door hardware kit of your choice
  • A table saw
  • An air nailer
  • x1 piece of glass
  • A glass cutter
  • A jig saw
  • Power drill

How to Make and Install Barn Door and Hardware

How to Make and Install Barn Door and Hardware

Step One: Making the Barn Door

Cut the plywood to the size of door you need. Then trim your long pieces to the right lengths and attach to the plywood’s edges, front and back. Use wood glue and the air nailer for this part of the step. Once that’s done, cut smaller pieces from the scrap plywood to attach on the top and bottom.

Step Two: Cutting the Glass

Using a steady hand and precaution, cut the glass to the size you’d like using the glass cutter.

Step Three: Glass Cut Out

Cut out a hole for the glass in the door, but make sure it’s a little smaller. Use the jig saw for this step.

Step Four: Secure the Window

Using the 1 inch boards, cut and make a frame for the glass insert. Then run them through the table saw to create a slot for the glass to sit snuggly in.

Step Five: Drill Holes

Drill all the holes you need to install the sliding door hardware.

Step Six: Paint

Paint or stain the wood material.

Step Seven: Install Hardware

Following the instructions, attach the sliding door hardware to the door and wall. Then put in place. Voila! Done!

Barn Door VS Pocket Door

They often get mixed up, so let’s explain the difference between a pocket door and a sliding barn door.

What is a Barn Door?

On actual barns that you see on a farm, the main front door is usually on a sliding mechanism because it’s much too big to swing in and out.

In homes, we’ve adopted this idea on a smaller scale for decorative purposes. It’s quite literally a barn style door that opens by sliding to the side.

What is a Pocket Door?

A pocket door works in a similar fashion, but it doesn’t usually have a ‘barn style’ look about it. It’s usually a simple and standard interior door but set on a sliding mechanism that allows you to slide it right into the wall. Like a pocket.

When Do You Use Them?

A sliding barn door is great for diving a large space into two, such as a living and dining room. They also work great for just about an interior door location and add a rustic flare to the décor.

A pocket door is mostly used in small spaces. Such as a half bathroom in a narrow hallway. Because no out-swing is needed, it doesn’t take away from that restricted traffic flow.
