Imagine a quaint little place surrounded by farm fields covered in prairie grasses, with a line of trees extending at the horizon and a small lake nestled on the edge of the woodland.
You’d get to admire all this beauty from inside a modern little cabin with expansive windows, raised pretty high up above ground and with two levels at your disposal. This is the Metal Lark, a magnificent cabin available for rent through Airbnb.
You can find the cabin in the Frederick region, Wisconsin. It’s quite tall and has a square-shaped floor plan, touching the ground only partially and featuring metal support stilts that allow it and the elevated deck to cantilever over the sloping landscape.
The cabin was designed by architect David O’Brien Wagner of Sala Architects and puts 800 square feet (74 sqm) of indoor and outdoor space at your disposal.
Strictly speaking about the interior, each of the two floors measures 20 ft x 20 ft. The lower level is connected to the elevated deck and includes a mudroom, a bedroom and a bathroom. The living room, dining area and the kitchen are all part of an open plan space on the upper level which allows them to offer the most magnificent views.
The cabin is mostly surrounded by glass in order to make the most of its location and to capture the best views towards the lake. The solid walls wrapped on the outside is raw corrugated steel are extra thick for insulation purposes, the roof forms overhangs on all sides for shade during the summer and the cabin is also conveniently placed close to a series of tall trees which create more shade. The expansive triple-pane windows are operable to ensure cross ventilation and the solar panels placed in the prairie behind the cabin give it all the energy it needs.
