Difference Between Full And Queen-Sized Mattress

The master bedroom in your house is your sanctuary. So it’s important to do everything you can to make it as comfortable as possible. But juggling that with your space, your budget, and convenience can be difficult.

One thing that needs to be decided is the mattress size. The two most popular mattress sizes for single beds are full and queen mattresses. But do you know the difference between full and queen mattresses?

Choosing A Mattress Size

When it comes to making that final decision on choosing a mattress size, you really want to get it right. You can easily choose a king-sized bed if you have a lot of space or a twin if you’re short on space.

However, the most likely end result will be you getting a full-sized bed or a queen-sized bed. Teens can still easily sleep on twin-sized beds, but adults usually need at least a full-sized bed for every night sleeping.

But how do you decide between the two? Well, you start off by learning the difference between the two then narrowing it down and checking off the pros and cons of each one for your room and your space.

History Of Mattress Sizes

History Of Mattress Sizes

You can probably assume that mattress sizes have grown over the years but do you know by how much? After all, prior to the 1800s, modern-day mattresses didn’t exist and people used straw and feathers stuffed in a cloth.

But the actual mattress sizes started to change and come into focus in the 1940s. Before then, most people slept on twin-sized beds. In the late 1940s to the early 1950s, two new sizes were introduced.

At the time, the names were tentative, but soon enough, they were called king and queen-sized beds. They were priced at around $70, which would be more like $800 in today’s world, so the price was fair.

The Need For King

What was truly strange is that in the 1950s, records show that Americans got taller. While earlier the number of men taller than 6ft was only 4%, that number grew to around 20% by the end of the 1950s.

So this was more about the need for the larger mattresses than the commercial aspect of them. But still, king-sized beds around this time made up less than 5% of the beds in America. From there, it steadily grew.

Today, around 17% of beds in U.S. homes are king-sized. The most popular size? Queen at over 40%. Yep, that’s a lot of people sleeping on queen-sized beds. This brings us to our point here today.

Difference Between Full And Queen

Now it’s time to get into the actual differences between full-sized and queen-sized mattresses. We will go over the dimensions and how to know what you’re looking at in-person when they are side-by-side.

Queen-Sized Bed

Queen Size Bed

As the most popular mattress size by far, the queen-sized mattress is 80 inches long by 60 inches wide. The reason it is so popular is that it can fit either one person comfortably or two people.

Since it is 80-inches long, it can also easily fit most people since the average height for Americans is 5 feet 9 inches for men and 5 feet 4 inches for women. Since the global average is slightly less than that, this works out well.

Full-Sized Bed

Bedding Sizes

A full-sized bed is also a popular choice just not as popular as the queen-sized bed. The full-sized bed is 75 inches long and 54 inches wide. This means it’s only slightly smaller than the queen mattress.

So it is perfect if you need a bit of extra floor space but still want the comfort of a larger bed than a twin bed. However, this is not at all ideal if you have two people sleeping in the same bed and is not recommended.

Bedding Sizes

Now it’s time to go over the different types of bedding and whether or not they can work for both queen-sized and full-sized beds or not. Some are universal while others are specifically for certain mattress sizes.

Bedding Sizes

Sheet Size

There are two different types of options for sheets. You have the fitted sheets and the flat sheets. Fitted sheets should be paired with the mattress size that they are made for but flat sheets are different.

While it won’t work out too well to use a full-sized sheet with a queen-sized bed, you can easily use a queen-sized flat sheet for a full-sized bed. If you have double mattresses, this may even work out better.

Pillow Size

When it comes to pillow sizes, you need to consider the type of pillow you are using. Throw pillows and body pillows are universal. Any decorative pillow can be universal, but sleeping pillows may not be.

The standard pillow size is 26-inches long, a little small for anything larger than a full. But the queen-sized pillow is 30-inches and works well for a queen-sized bed but two will hang over the sides of a full.

Comforter/Duvet

A comforter is usually a bit stiffer than most other bedding options. For this reason, using them is different. Again, it is usually best to stick with the right comforter for the bed that you are using, but there are exceptions.

You can get by with using a queen-sized comforter on a full-sized bed. The goal is to have at least ten extra inches for the length of the bed and at least twenty for the width to cover both sides. Just don’t get much more than 15-inches on each side.

Skirt/Dust Ruffle

The skirt or dust ruffle is a piece of bedding that goes over the box spring and under the mattress. It dusts the floor to make the bed look pretty and elegant. Not all beds have one of these however, so you don’t need one either.

But if you want one, you can get two different kinds. There is the classic kind that goes over like a fitted sheet, which needs to be sized perfectly. Then there are the wrap-around ones that are more universal as they wrap like a skirt.

Blanket, Quilt, Etc.

These are about preference. Some people like their blanket to touch the floor while others like them to lay on top, folded neatly. So what you should do is measure the distance from the top of the bed to the floor.

From there, you can create a formula to help you find the perfect size. Don’t forget to take folding the top over into account or any other decorative thing that you do to your bed to make it fancier and more appealing.

The Frame Size

King Vs California King Size

What about the frame? Well, generally, the frame is the first thing that you buy. The frame is the solid part of the bed that the mattress goes on and there are many different styles of frames to choose from.

Base Frame

The base frame usually consists of bars for the bottom and legs. Unless you have a platform bed of course which won’t have legs or at least won’t have long legs. The base does decide the mattress size.

This is when you cannot give any either way. Again, platform beds have more leeway but the edges of most frames prevent you from using any other mattress size but the designated size for the frame.

Headboard

The headboard is usually attached to the frame but it can also come separately. If it does, then it is highly versatile. As long as you don’t get an extremely narrow or wide headboard, it can work for most beds.

Although most headboards aren’t 100% universal, queen and full headboards usually work for the other as long as it doesn’t only attach to the base frame in one way. If that’s the case, you’re locked in.

Box Spring

The box spring is definitely important and it needs to be the same size as the mattress. Because the mattress should be placed directly on top of the box spring and should be flush. Otherwise, the bedding won’t look right.

So when choosing a box spring, double-check that it is the right size. For example, a full-sized mattress needs a full-sized box spring. Unless of course, you’re using a non-traditional box spring that is more universal.

Mattress Pad

The mattress pad definitely needs to be at least as large as the mattress. This is so that the pad is safe and so that it covers the whole bed. However, you can cut most mattress pads to fit if they are too large.

So in short, make sure the mattress pad is large enough but it’s not important that it isn’t too large because you can make one that is too large work on most occasions. Just check the material and trim first.

Disposing Of Your Mattress

Before we wrap this up, I wanted to make an important point. You can’t usually just toss your mattress out or place it out on the curb. Disposing of a mattress correctly is important for the safety and health of everyone.

We have a complete guide on how to dispose of a mattress so check that out. Now you’re ready to get your new mattress ready and hopefully have the best night of sleep you’ve had in ages! So get ready yo rest!
