How To Use Mustard Color Tastefully

The easiest way to make your home unique and become an expression of you is to choose the right paint colors and paint combinations. This is cheap, effective, and makes a huge difference in the appearance of your home.

When it comes to exterior house colors, you generally want to be safe, especially if you have any HOA guidelines you need to watch out for. But when it comes to the interior of your home, well, that is your canvas.

What Is The Mustard Color?

Mustard itself is more than a color. The color has a history that doesn’t begin with the color of the rug that you are putting in your living room. It goes deeper and means more to a lot of people around the world.

Meaning Of Mustard Color

Mustard color comes from the color of the mustard plant, not the condiment, as the color has been around longer than the condiment we use on hotdogs. The mustard plant is actually a species of plant.

It is in fact used to make the condiment. But it didn’t start there. We will get more into that soon, but first, take a look at the color of this plant and you will see the beauty of the color mustard in its natural form.

History Of Mustard Color

The mustard color comes from the mustard plant, that is true. But did you know that mustard seeds, which come from the plant, have an interesting history? The seeds have been found in Stone Age settlements.

But they’ve also been found written about in ancient books such as The Bible. The book speaks of how small the mustard seed is yet how large the harvest of the seed can be. A parable of how even the smallest things can make a big impact.

Mustard Color Outside The Home

The mustard color is actually more popular outside of the home than inside the home. This is because it is such a popular color for autumn. The natural mustard color of falling leaves is the inspiration here.

Now, it has become a staple color in the autumn line-up and is worn by people all over the world during the time of year when leaves begin to fall. The tradition of blending in with nature is truly remarkable.

Shades Of Mustard

Despite popular belief, there is more than a shade or two of mustard. There are many shades of mustard but today, we’re going to talk about a few of the most popular shades and how they are made.

Pure Mustard

The purest form of mustard you will find will be 100% red and around 85% green. Unlike other mustards though, this mustard will actually have a bit of blue, but no more than 35%, preferably a bit less.

Chrome Mustard

Chrome mustard is a unique shade that can consist of 100% red, 60-70% green, and 0% blue. This name can vary but the point is that there is a non-blue silver tone to the color combo, if that makes sense.

Mustard Brown

Mustard brown is a rather orange-yellow color. It is a bit weaker on the red but still has no blue in it, and a bit less green as well. This can be customized but it isn’t nearly as strong as the previous two mustards.

Medium Mustard

Medium mustard is a unique mustard color with much more green than Mustard Brown but also with slightly more red. The blue in mustard colors is almost always non-existent. Though it can be added in moderation.

Khaki Mustard

Khaki mustard usually comes in with a red rating of around 190 and a green of around 150. This can vary and if you add too much green, it can turn into olive mustard, which is a very nice color as well.

Deep Mustard

Dee mustard is less yellow than any other mustard color. It consists of a red around 150 and a green around 120. This again can vary depending on your taste and it is always fun to play around with color ratios.

Mustard Color In The Living Room

Mustard can be found in living rooms quite often. When it is found in these rooms, it is usually dimmer and warmer than in other rooms. This is because the living room is a place to relax and focus on the family.

So the brightness of pure mustard color can be distracting. When in the living room, it is usually better to have a mustard brown or a dijon mustard color to tie things together and welcome anyone in.

Where To Use: walls are usually the best option in the living room. But if it isn’t too bright, don’t be afraid to pull in a mustard-colored couch into the mix. You will be surprised at how cozy it can be.

When brought into the kitchen, the mustard color looks as natural as ever. You actually have creative freedom when using the mustard color in the kitchen because all yellows are popular kitchen colors.

When using mustard in the kitchen though, it is traditional to go more rustic or farmhouse. You can try going modern, but it’s a little more difficult to pull off than whenever you are going country with the scheme.

Where To Use: You can use mustard yellow almost anywhere. Cabinets will make the biggest statement, and so will tile. But for something softer, then opt for curtains or a simple backsplash that’s mustard.

Mustard Color In The Laundry Room

Laundry rooms can be difficult to organize and even more difficult to decorate appropriately. When the room is small and utilitarian, it is hard to tie everything together. But that doesn’t mean mustard can’t work here.

Mustard can work well in any laundry room, you just need t use the right shade. Medium mustard colors are usually the safest. They bring everything together, don’t overwhelm, but also brighten the place up.

Where To Use: Of course, your creative freedom is there at your liberty, but a simple cabinet, a rug, or curtains will have the greatest effect. But feel free to play around with this small room as only family will use it.

The dining room is a great place to add mustard. After all, mustard is a tasty color that will make guests even hungrier. This is also where you can really get creative! The dining room is often underrated.

At least as far as creativity goes. This isn’t a place to add a table and call it good. This is a place where you can create murals, have music playing, and hang a chandelier. Take it back to the days of fine dining at home.

Where To Use: While you probably won’t find mustard-colored tables, you can get mustard padding for your chairs or a mustard tablecloth. But of course, the mural with a mustard background is a winner.

Sitting room, parlor, drawing room, lounge. There are many names for the room where you invite guests in to sit and visit without the distractions of other rooms in the home. This is similar to a living room without a TV.

This doesn’t mean you can’t add a TV to your parlor, but it isn’t standard. Instead, this is a warm and inviting room used to welcome guests and offer them a snack or a drink. Mustard is the perfect color to do that.

Where To Use: It’s probably best to go fairly small with mustard color in the sitting room. Start with wall art or an accent chair. Starting with carpet or walls can be overwhelming to those sensitive to yellow.

Mustard is wonderful in the bedroom because it is all about you and anyone else who shares the bedroom with you. Deep mustard will keep things safe and comfortable while bright mustard will be cheerful.

That’s the thing about mustard though, you can use it to control the mood. All shades are welcome in the bedroom, it’s all up to the homeowners or bedroom-owners as to which shade suits them best.

Where To Use: You can use mustard in the bedroom anywhere, but typically, it is used on things that are easy to change such as bedding or curtains. Yes, curtains can be mustard in any room in the house.

The most important part of having mustard color in your home is making it your own. Anyone can pick something that’s called mustard and paint it onto their walls. But it takes real creativity to be inventive.

Choose a color that doesn’t have mustard in the name or pick a unique blend of mustard and layer them throughout the room. It’s all up to the artist and today, that artist is you and your canvas is your home.
