Relax, every parent has been there. What child hasn’t left a slime trail at home? And now you need some DIY expert slime cleaning tips.

It’s easy to remove slime from kitchen tiles and laminate flooring. But carpet fibers are another thing. With some elbow grease and paper towels, your carpet will look new again.

Here’s what you need to know.

Types Of Slime

How To Get Slime Out Of Carpet

Before we learn how to remove slime from carpet, we need to cover the types of slime. Different slime demands new strategies. You need to know what you’re cleaning before you begin.

Classic Slime

Classic slime is thick. It is durable and sold over the counter. This slime type doesn’t stick to carpet unless stepped on. If it’s dried, it will come out if you gently scrape it off the carpet with a butter knife

Slime from floor or carpet

Butter Slime

Butter slime is slick and smooth. Its texture is like putty, which is slippery and stretches. It also pops when like gum. Butter slime sticks to carpet.

Sugar Slime

Sugar slime is crunchy. It feels like it has tiny beads and often sounds like packed snow when you squeeze it. Sugar slime doesn’t stick to carpet because of its texture. Some variations will harden and become difficult to clean.

Cloud Slime

Cloud slime is a dream for adults. It isn’t too sticky, but fluffy like meringue. It doesn’t stick to surfaces too bad but rolls off them like fluffy clay. You want your child to have cloud slime. Icee slime, is almost the same but made with instant snow.

Jelly Or Clear Slime

Jelly slimes have a clear base and are like the slime used in Flarp and on Nickelodeon. It is a disaster when it gets in carpet. It is one of the hardest to remove. Hope your child doesn’t have jelly slime.

Other Slimes

There are many types of slime, but most are related to one of the listed slimes. Adding glitter and other ingredients won’t change how slime effects carpet.

Watching An Expert At Work

This video is a perfect example of how to get slime out of carpet. As you can see, this mom starts out with vinegar and saturates the stain well. She then scrapes the carpet and removes any excess slime or vinegar.

Then, she adds hot water and keeps on scraping. This saturates the stain and is another method used to remove slime.

Her final step isn’t necessary, but it ensures a deep clean. She uses a standard carpet cleaner to remove the slime spots in her carpet. The results are amazing. This method will work for most slime stains.

Other Ways To Get Slime Out Of Carpet

Playing with slime carefully

The method in the video is tried and true, but others exist. If you want to use one method to clean the slime out of your carpet, one of these options will suit you.

Hot Water

This is by far the safest way to get slime out of carpet and works well for mild incidents. However, hot water alone won’t remove all slime stains so unless your slime isn’t in deep, you’ll need to add something else.

What You’ll Need

  • Warm water
  • Blunt knife
  • Vacuum
  • Sponge
  • Dry rag

The first thing you’ll do is loosen the slime with the knife. Then you’ll vacuum up the pieces. After that, you can start using the sponge to saturate the area with warm hot water. Let it set for a minute before drying. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Club Soda

This second method is great if water doesn’t quite do the trick. It’s completely safe and fun, because who doesn’t love watching carbonation at work? However, not everyone has club soda lying around.

What You’ll Need

  • Club soda
  • Blunt knife
  • Vacuum
  • Dry rag

This method is exactly the same as the water method only uses club soda instead of water. Scrape off everything you can, then vacuum it up. From there, you will wet the area with club soda and let it soak. Then wet with water and dry.

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol will work better than the listed methods, but it’s riskier. It can break down the bottom layers of your carpet, leaving a hole in the slime’s absence. That’s not cool.

What You’ll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Blunt knife
  • Vacuum
  • Dry cloth

This method is very similar to other methods. The biggest difference is that you can’t let the alcohol set or go too deep. A great way to find out if it will ruin your carpet is to find a place no one will see and try it out.

Vinegar And Baking Soda

This is probably the most common way. Everyone has these ingredients lying around. Vinegar is magic in itself but if you add baking soda, you add texture and a chemical reaction that works wonders.

What You’ll Need

  • Blunt knife
  • Vacuum
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • Bucket of warm water
  • Sponge
  • A dry cloth or paper towels

You’ll want to break up any large chunks. Then you can sprinkle baking soda on the stain. Pour vinegar on the baking soda and let it soak for a few minutes. The longer, the better, but no more than 20 minutes.

Use a sponge to wet the spot and clean up the mixture. All that’s left is to dry it and see what you’re left with. If this works but doesn’t do the trick, try it again before giving up.

Dish Soap

Dish soap is great for removing grease and other stains on dishes, but it has many uses outside the kitchen too. A good dish soap can work as well as alcohol when removing stains and breaking down materials.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 tsp clear unscented liquid dish soap
  • 2 cups warm water
  • Spray bottle
  • Sponge
  • Bucket of warm water
  • Clean dry cloth
  • Blunt knife
  • Vacuum

Start by scraping the excess just like before and vacuum it up good. Then, spray the area with Dawn and water mixture. Wipe it with water and repeat until the stain is gone. Afterward, dry the area.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Only use this method on light-colored carpets and only after you’ve tested it on an area that is hidden. Test it like you’re removing a stain, only give it about an hour and see if it damages the carpet.

What You’ll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Scraping tool
  • 3 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • Spray bottle
  • Sponge
  • Dry towel

Spray with peroxide that has been mixed with water. Let it set for five minutes to soak up the slime. Then wash it with a wet cloth. Repeat as necessary, drying the area when finished.

When The Slime Is Dry

You should try to remove slime from carpet as soon as possible. But when you’re a parent, it’s hard to keep tabs on everything. If the slime does harden, then don’t worry, it’s still possible to get it out of your carpet.

Ice Ice, Baby

The easiest method for getting dry slime out of carpet involves ice. You’ll put ice on the area and let it sit until the slime is frozen. Then, break the slime with a pick or similar tool. After you do, you can use the same methods as mentioned above to finish the job.

Let The Mixture Set

You can also let the mixtures set for twice as long as you would with wet slime. This will break down the slime and allow you to remove it. When using harsh ingredients, don’t let it set more than five minutes unless tested previously.

Scrubbing Brush

A scrubbing brush is helpful for removing dried slime. Apply the solution and scrub, scrub, scrub. This is a great way to help the process but shouldn’t be done with harsh solutions.

Chemical Solutions

Nobody wants to use harsh chemicals unless necessary. But if all else fails, you may have to. A standard carpet cleaner won’t harm your carpet and isn’t strong enough to harm a human. However, it isn’t always enough.

Something stronger like OxyClean may do the trick. Use as instructed, like the other methods. It will work where other methods failed but still broke down the slime.

Whatever you do, don’t let it overwhelm you. If all else fails, you can call a professional and they can have it done in no time at all. But of course, you’ll want to try your own ways first, which will work 90 percent of the time.
