The London house is atypical to say the least. It enjoys a really nice location on a fairly secluded site without much exposure to other neighboring structure or to the street. This gave architecture studio Eldridge London, the one responsible for this wonderful project, the opportunity to create something unique and special.
They designed the house to be very open to its immediate surroundings which is to be expected given the topography and location. However, what was completely unexpected was the actual design that the team came up with for this project.
The house has a very contemporary and futuristic sort of aesthetic, with big curved volumes, entire walls made of glass and sections that seem to be floating. The team also made sure to take a holistic approach and to also design the landscape and outdoor areas around the house in the same way in order to create a truly immersive experience. The house is fully open to the garden and rear section of the site, featuring a glazed ground floor area that curves in an oval shape and takes in as much of the view as possible. It’s a case of nature and architecture working hand in hand and complement each other perfectly and that results in a memorable design.
In many aspects, this is actually a conventional home. It has a big backyard and a beautiful garden with lots of greenery, flowers, trees, decorative water features and even a garden shed. It’s the way in which these elements are designed that makes this such as an interesting and inspiring project. Inside, the main living areas are placed on the ground floor. There’s a stylish sunken sitting area with a curved sectional facing the garden and a minimalistic kitchen with a raised island platform.
The entire first floor is dedicated to the master bedroom and the floors are connected by a spiral staircase encased in a cylindrical space made of concrete. There’s also a guest bedroom on the ground floor towards the rear section as well as a home gym with outdoor access. The first floor appears to be floating, detached from the main volume and suspended on strong pillars, creating a big terrace surrounded by a rooftop garden.
