The Common Household Ingredients that Remove Grease Stains from Jeans

Nothing can ruin a day faster than grease splattering on your favorite jeans. Grease causes some pretty hefty stains and can be almost impossible to get out once set in. But if you act fast, you can remove grease stains from jeans with two common household ingredients: baking soda and dish soap.

Baking soda aids in soaking up grease and dish soap attaches to the remaining oil, allowing water to lift it away from the surface.

Step 1: Blot Grease with a Paper Towel

Take off your jeans and blot the grease stain with a paper towel to remove as much as possible.

Step 2: Sprinkle Baking Soda On the Stain

Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda over the stain and let it sit. The baking soda will help absorb more of the oil. After two hours, vacuum the baking soda off of the pants.

Step 3: Scrub with Dish Soap and Launder in Cold Water

Squirt a few drops of grease-fighting dish soap directly onto the stain and scrub in a circular motion until sudsy.

Throw the jeans in your washing machine and wash them with regular laundry detergent on the cold cycle. (Do not use any heat on your jeans until after the stain is gone. Heat will set the oil in.)

Step 4: Hang Dry and Inspect

Hang dry your pants. (Avoid the dryer until you know the stain is gone.) Repeat steps two through four if there’s still a grease spot after the jeans are dry.

Returning the jeans to their original state might take 2-3 washes, depending on the severity.
