The lesser-known types of table lamps for living room or any room
We’re all familiar with what a table lamp is: the definition is in the name. But dis you ever stop to think that there’s multiple different types of table lamps and each serves a specific purpose or has a unique characteristic?
Here’s some of the lesser-known types you might not have heard of before:
Decorative lamps
Yes, it’s a pretty board term but it’s a good way to distinguish between lamps that are meant to be primarily functional and those that serve a decorative purpose and add to the ambiance and aesthetic of the room.
Decorative lamps focus on the aesthetic more than the function. They’re designed to look interesting or beautiful and they’re meant to be used as decorations similar to how you’d use a painting to add color and beauty to a room. They also have the added advantage of providing lighting.
Tiffany lamps
Do you know those lamps with multicolored lampshades made of various pieces of glass and decorated with copper foil? They have a mosaic-inspired look and they’re reminiscent of cathedral windows. They also have a name: Tiffany lamps.
Fiber optic lamps
These are not so much interior decorations or lighting fixtures as they are toys and just fun things to play with for a while.
Fiber optic lamps don’t have light bulbs but instead they feature these thin filaments made of glass or polymers which transmit the light from the base of the lamp all the way to the tips.
They’re really fun to play with and they can also be used to create a soothing and fantasy-like ambiance or décor in a room.
Piano lamps
As the name suggests, piano lamps were at first used by musicians to be able to shed light on the music sheet during a performance. They had a thin horizontal light source at the top which extended the whole width of the tune sheet and was attached to the piano.
Banker’s lamps
This type of lamp is commonly used in libraries throughout the US and was first introduced in the mid 1900s under the name Emeralite. It’s a table lamp with a brass stand, a green glass shade and a pull-chain switch. There’s now all sorts of variations created based on this style.
How To Choose A Table Lamp
There’s a few important questions you should ask yourself before buying a table lamp such as what type of lamp you choose, in what style and, of course, how big should the lamp be. Size in this case matters.
As a general idea, these are the measurements that you should keep in mind when looking for a new lamp:
- The overall size of the lamp in relation to the table – the lamp shouldn’t be more than 1.5 times taller than the surface it’s sitting on. Also, the shade’s diameter should be smaller than the width of the table so it doesn’t stick out.
- The lamp’s base and shade – You should also pay attention to the proportions of the lampshade in relation to the base. The shade’s diameter should fit the size of the base otherwise it will look disproportionate and unbalanced. Look for shades that are within 2’’ of the base in terms of size.
- The length of the shade and the base – As a general idea, the lampshade length should be somewhere around 65% – 90% of the base length or a third of the lamp’s total height.
There are of courses cases when the lamp’s design is specifically created to make a statement or to transmit a certain idea in which case these measurements might not follow the rules.
Choosing a Table Lamp For The Living Room
In the living room the lamp is usually placed in the side table next to the sofa. That way it can be used as a reading light or an ambient light to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the room.
Based on that, a side table lamp should ideally measure around 24’’ – 34’’ and the bottom of the shade should line up with the eye level of those sitting on the sofa.
Choosing a lamp for the bedroom
In here lamps are typically sitting on bedside tables or nightstands. They can be used for reading or when getting reading for bed and doing various other activities that don’t require a powerful light source.
You should make sure the lamp is easily reachable from bed so you can turn it on and off without stretching or getting up. In terms of size, a bedroom lamp should measure between 24’’ – 27’’. The bottom of the lampshade should line up with your chin when you’re sitting in bed.
Choosing a table lamp for the office
In the office it’s actually important to have adequate lighting in order to be able to get work done efficiently and comfortably. Choose the lamp based on the type of activities you do in your office such as reading, writing, using the computer and so on.
If you have a large desk either get a big lamp or several smaller ones. Also consider layering the lighting and having multiple sources that bring into focus specific areas. Task lighting is important and should be done efficiently.
Are table lamps good for your eyes?
You’ve probably heard this before, most likely related to reading: low light is bad for your eyes. That’s why we’ve gotten used to using a table lamp when we’re sitting on the sofa reading or when we’re working on the computer.
But simply having a lamp and turning it on doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no strain on the eyes. There’s a few more aspects to keep in mind. For example, if the lampshade is clear and not opaque the light can be too powerful which is also not great for the eyes.
Similarly, if the lamp is placed over your shoulder the light can create a glare on the book or on your reading material which strains the eyes.
Computer vision syndrome is also a thing. It refers to the effect computer screens have on our eyes, especially when used for long periods of time.
Staring at a computer screen for long periods of time forces the eyes to continually focus and to move back and forth and they adjust to the moving images and text. This causes the eyes to become tired.
Keeping a desk lamp close to the computer screen can help with that. However, avoid having the light source directly overhead because this can create a glare on the screen. Opt instead for a more direct lighting source and position the lamp accordingly.
If you’re using a lamp the best place for a lamp is directly behind it. This doesn’t create a glare and prevents the light from going directly into your eyes.
The type of lamp you use is also important. Table lamps that produce a softer and more diffuse light are better. Smaller lamps are also better than large lamps because they cut down on glare.
What are the different types of light bulbs?
Picking out a light bulb is not as easy and straightforward as it once used to be. There’s multiple choices to be made between various different types of light bulbs.
Incandescent vs LED vs CFL light bulbs
There was a time when incandescent bulbs were our only option. Nowadays they still exist but there’s also other types which have become more popular such as CFLs and LEDs.
CFL means compact fluorescent lamp and together with LEDs they cost more compared to incandescent bulbs. The advantage however is that they use considerably less energy and last for a lot longer which makes them the most cost-effective options.
Incandescent bulbs produce warmer light which some people prefer and they also work with dimmer switches. Some LED bulbs also work with dimmers but you should always check.
Dimmable bulbs
Dimmable light bulbs are great if you want to be able to adjust the intensity of the light. For example, you can use them in the bedroom to create a cozy and relaxing mood. Some table lamps come with built-in dimmer switches but these can also be purchased separately.
Common bulb shapes
There’s also a distinction to be made between the different shapes light bulbs can have. The three most common ones are:
A19 – this is the classic light bulb shape: round at the top with a little nub at the base
Spiral – spiral-shaped bulbs, also referred to as twisted bulbs are your classic CFL bulbs which feature a long and thin fluorescent light spun into a coil.
Candle – these are small and usually found in accent lamps or decorative electric candles and garlands.
Common light bulb base sizes
This is actually one of the most important things you should pay attention to when buying a light bulb. These are the three most common base sizes for light bulbs:
- E26 – this is by far the most common size for table lamp bulbs. The bulbs measure 26mm in diameter and are considered the standard type.
- E17 – this is known as an intermediate base and it’s also fairly common on table lamps and desk lamps. The bulbs are smaller compared to the standard E26 ones.
- E12 – these are small light bulbs, usually candle bulbs and they’re used predominantly in decorative lamps or night lights.

Believe it or not, the main material used in the design of this lamp is seaweed. This is the Marine Light, a table lamp designed by Nir Meiri. As you might have noticed, the designs of these two lamps are inspired by construction cranes and heavy lifting machines. Plywood is a very common material but it’s rarely used with aesthetic purposes, being mostly appreciated for its functional character. This is not however the case for the Streamlined lamp, a creation of Studio Roex. The idea behind this collection is to highlight the characteristics of plywood and to reveal the beauty of its layers.
Utilitarian lamp with a fun aesthetic
Frank is a table lamp that combines utilitarian and aesthetic characteristics. The body of the lamp is made of metal and wood, two materials that complement each other. The lampshade has a swivel mechanism which allows the user to adjust its tilt and orientation. It lasts for 8 hours.
Hat stand lamp that you can dress up
It’s easy to recognize the idea behind the Chapeau lamp. Philippe Starck found the inspiration for this project in the simplicity and elegance of the hat stand and translated that into a new object able to function as an accent light. The really cool thing about it is that the user can use any type of hat as a lampshade thus offering him the freedom to customize the lamp as desired.

The inspiration for this minimalist lamp series designed by Nir Meiri came from the moon, more specifically the faces of the moon. The architectural design of the Moresque lamps was meant to capture the defining details of the Alhambra complex which is a fortress located in Andalucia, Spain.
